One city, a dozen kinds of yard
You can see it driving Ridge Road. One front lawn sits under mature oak canopy and goes thin and pale by mid-summer. Two blocks over, a new build on open fill bakes from morning until dark. Same city, same sandy ground, two completely different jobs.
St. Pete Lawncare handles residential lawn care, landscaping and pressure washing across Pinellas County, and Largo is where that variety shows up most. It's the third-largest city in the county. Its yards run from the older tree-canopied blocks near Ridge Road and Walsingham out to Harbor Bluffs and Collins Estates.
Housing here spans 1950s block ranch homes and brand-new construction, so nothing about a yard is safe to assume by ZIP code. What changes from block to block:
- •Hours of direct sun
- •Tree roots in the turf
- •Depth of the fill
- •Lot size
- •Irrigation coverage
Treat a shaded Largo lawn like a sunny one and you'll pay every week for a yard that keeps sliding backward.
The frustration: your watering day is a two-part answer
Largo is on Pinellas County Utilities, and the county is under a shortage order that allows one watering day a week. Which day you get depends on two things: which side of SR 580 your address sits on, and whether your house number ends in an odd or even digit. Only two windows are allowed, 12:01 to 4 a.m. or 8 to 11:59 p.m., and a first violation runs $193 and doubles from there.
Where that lands in Largo:
- •Even house number north of SR 580: Saturdays
- •Odd house number north of SR 580: Wednesdays
- •Even house number south of SR 580: Tuesdays
- •Odd house number south of SR 580: Thursdays
Get it wrong and the citation isn't a warning.
What shade, sun and sandy fill do to a Largo lawn
Most Largo lawns are St. Augustinegrass, and Floratam is the cultivar you'll see most often. According to UF/IFAS, Floratam doesn't persist in a yard that gets less than six hours of sun a day. Under a dense oak canopy, no feeding program fixes a lawn that simply can't get light.
Shade doesn't need more fertilizer. It needs less lawn.
Height matters as much as water. Standard St. Augustine cultivars should come down to 3.5 to 4 inches, and cutting lower than that stresses the turf and invites scalping when rain pushes your schedule around. Sandy fill is the other half of the problem. It drains fast, so nutrients move out of reach long before the next visit.
What we usually find on a first walk-through:
- •Thinning turf under trees
- •Pale, narrow blades in full sun
- •Dry patches along the driveway
- •Weeds filling the bare spots
- •A sprinkler head watering the fence
You can't mow your way out of that list.
Three Largo yards, three lawn care plans
Under the oaks off Ridge Road
Canopy, root competition and leaf drop set the whole job here. Bed work and trimming end up mattering more than the mowing itself.
On a new build in full sun
Open fill, no shade overhead and no root system established yet. This lawn wants water discipline and steady cutting at the right height.
Around a corner lot with tired irrigation
Heads out of adjustment, coverage gaps, dry corners. Fix the watering first and everything after it holds.
Same city, three plans, and none of them matches the lawn next door.
The reward: a yard that never falls behind
Summer is the hard stretch. Pinellas County's fertilizer ordinance bans nitrogen and phosphorus on turf and landscape from June 1 to September 30. The feeding happens in spring and fall, and summer is about mowing, water and watching for fungus after a wet spell.
What a steady plan gets you:
- •A mow line that holds week to week
- •Beds and edges that read clean from the street
- •Fewer weeds each season, not more
- •A yard that looks handled when somebody drops by
None of it is complicated. It's just specific to your property, and it's hard to do yourself on a Friday night after work.
From Ridge Road to Harbor Bluffs, and what it costs
At St. Pete Lawncare, we cover Largo end to end: the shaded streets off Ridge Road, the blocks around Walsingham, the larger lots in Harbor Bluffs and Collins Estates. We work Seminole, just next door and Pinellas Park on the same routes, so a Largo property is never a special trip.
Basic maintenance on a typical Largo lawn runs $35 to $75 per visit, depending on lot size, access and how much hedge and shrub trimming is involved. Weekly mowing and edging is the backbone of that, with bed work and cleanup scheduled around it.
If you'd rather see what moves the number before you call, what lawn care costs around here breaks it down line by line.
The same crew every visit, and a price that doesn't shift on you.
